The Irish film ‘Ondine’ which was  produced on the Beara Peninsula in the summer of ‘08 is due for release to the cinemas in Ireland, England and the US in March of this year.  The leading role in the film is played by Colin Farrell and directed by Neil Jordan who also has a holiday home in the Beara peninsula.  The story line is based on a simple fisherman, trawling off the Beara coast line, who catches a beautiful and mysterious woman in his nets (Alicja Bachleda), who appears to be dead, but miraculously comes back to life before his eyes.  The film is a mix of myth and fantasy within the life of a fishing community. Many of the extras played in the film are Castletownbere locals. The film was shot in Pulleen harbour three miles west of Castletownbere town, with more scenes in Castletownbere town, Berehaven harbour and Bere Island.  Colin Farrell is nominated for ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role in Film’ in the  RTE 7th Annual Irish Film and Television Awards for his role in ‘Ondine’.  People of the Beara Peninsula are very excited to see the completed film on the big screen, and the producers of the film have informed Beara Tourism that the landscape and scenery seen in the film is breathtaking.
